In Copán Ruinas, Food Forest uses the Miyawaki system to restore the Mayan Watershed, addressing severe water shortages and promoting rapid forest growth.

In response to severe water shortages caused by drought and deforestation, the municipality of Copán Ruinas has requested the restoration of the native forest of the Mayan Watershed. This watershed is crucial for providing water to Copán Ruinas, and restoring it has become an urgent priority. Food Forest has been tasked with planning and executing this vital project.

The Mayan Watershed is experiencing critical deforestation and degradation, leading to severe water shortages for the local communities. Restoring the forest around the watershed is essential to stabilise the soil, promote biodiversity, and capture carbon. The Miyawaki system of high-density planting will be used for rapid growth and effective reforestation.

We will focus on urgent reforestation around the watersheds using the Miyawaki system, which involves planting diverse native species closely together. This method promotes fast forest growth, stabilises the soil, and enhances biodiversity. The project aims to quickly restore the forest and improve water availability for Copán Ruinas.

This project will provide multiple benefits:

  • Provide water supply for the community.
  • Enhance biodiversity.
  • Stabalise soil to prevent erosion
  • Increased carbon capture

This project will demonstrate how effective reforestation can combat climate challenges and support local ecosystems. These trees will also provide food and livelihoods for many in the area as they begin to fruit.
