Food Forest is responding to a request to help restore 4,000 hectares in Santiago de Puringla, working with NGOs, Water Committees and the Municipality.

In Santiago de Puringla, the local organisation ASOMAINCUPACO and the town's municipality have asked Food Forest to assist in restoring 4,000 hectares of forest. Our role is to build central germination nursery to supply six forest nurseries with seedlings and to help coordinate with various stakeholders including the municipaility, Water Committees and schools to plant hundreds of thousands of native trees.

Deforestation around Santiago de Puringla has led to water shortages, a loss of biodiversity and the deterioration of the environment. Restoring these forests is critical for stabilising the ecosystem andimproving water resources. By planting native trees, we can help reverse these adverse effects of climate change and support the community. These trees will be beneficial not only to the recovery of the environment but in feeding the local community.

We aim to establish a production flow of seedlings for an existing network of forest nurseries for planting by local stakeholders. By partnering with local organisations, schools, and Water Committees, we want to plant hundreds of thousands of native trees. This collaborative effort ensures community involvement and long-term sustainability.

Planting native trees will provide multiple benefits: restoring the ecosystem, improving water resources, and increasing biodiversity. The trees we plant are not just for reforestation, they provide food sources including fruits, vegetables, and nuts. This creates jobs for the community when the trees are harvested, offering both economic benefits as well as providing food for the community.
