Supporting Fairtrade-certified coffee farmers in Quiraguira to plant more tree, by species and volume, and improve biodiversity with their new nature reserve.

In Quiraguira, Masaguara, Intibucá, COAQUIL, a large coffee-producing cooperative, has been planting 50,000 trees annually for the past three years. They have also purchased ten hectares of land and officially declared it a nature reserve. We are supporting the cooperative to help expand their efforts by planting a greater variety and greater volume of trees.

Climate change is having severe impacts oncoffee production. Increased temperatures bring greater humidity and fungal diseases like coffee tree leaf rust that has devastated farms in the coop. Already, farms under 1000m above sea level have become unproductive, and droughts have brought water shortages and loss of production. COAQUIL’s initiative aims to safeguard their farms, make their coffee farming more sustainable and protect their environment. Planting trees supports coffee production but also improves water supply, microclimate, soil stability and biodiversity. The nature reserve is strengthening the local ecosystem and protecting the habitat of many native species.

We will be supporting COAQUIL in scaling up its tree-planting operation by providing seeds, seedlings and technical support. Our focus is on planting trees that provide food sources, such as fruit and nut trees, which offer economic and nutritional benefits to the community that the coffee coop in in.

The expansion will result in a more sustainable coffee farming area, increased biodiversity, and better environmental conservation. By planting food-producing trees, we create food sources for the community, including honey production, enhancing both economic stability and food security. The nature reserve initiative of the coop will serve as a model for sustainable land use and conservation.
